Doesn't surprise me that Kazuma mentioned me to you. I suspect the man's going to take up a lot of my attention until he gets another employee.

[ also, guess who has no clue how Japanese name order works and has been calling Kiryu by his first name for ages, THIS GUY ]

[Yeah, Pagan's going to just try and fix that.]

[ And a few minutes later, here's Hickey, knocking on Pagan's door. ]

Pagan opens the door for him, giving him a quick look. Pagan, as always, is in his best pink suit, everything immaculate.]

Ah. Mr. Hickey, I presume?

[ Holy hell, Kiryu wasn't joking about that suit. Hickey, in his best Navy attire (so just so much wool) gives Pagan a little nod. ]

Kazuma told me about your sense of style. It's certainly something else to see in person.

[ Ostentatious ass. ]

[Pagan grins.]

Yes, well, I do believe in making an impression.

[He's already got two glasses out for them and sets them on a low table, gesturing for Hickey to take either the couch or the chair nearby.]

That name again. Are you already such a good friend with him?

I mean, it's his last name, isn't it. I wouldn't say we're close friends, Min, but surely there's nothing too friendly about using a bloke's last name.

[ Somebody doesn't know how Eastern name order works. Though hey, don't mind Hickey as he sits down on the couch and goes to pick up one of the glasses. ]

Pagan, please. [He sits down in the chair, all lazy arrogance, picking up his own glass by the rim, tapping it with his fingertips.]

And it is not his surname, if that's what you mean. It's a name reserved for family and close friends. I'm not surprised he hasn't corrected you, though.

He is accommodating to social slights from most.

Well, no matter. I find it more interesting that he's asked us to meet. He said he taught you mahjong?

[ Hickey looks shocked for a moment and then outright annoyed as Pagan continues. ]

Could have at least saved me looking like a bloody fool, [ he grumbles. Because yeah, at least in Hickey's mind, he's neither family nor close friends. ]

But yes. Kiryu taught me how to play. I'm up for a game if you are—though, you'll forgive a man if he's still a little new to the game.

[Pagan gestures to his drink.]

We can enjoy this and then go. I don't have a set here.

And don't worry about Kiryu. You could hardly have known. Now! I'm more interested in you. When do you come from?

Met Harry Goodsir once. I had a broken nose and he managed to fix it. But that's the only interaction I've had with any of them.

Of course, I've been here over a year. I know who those men are.

And yet you still invite me to join you for drinks. Interesting.

[Pagan shrugs.]

Is it? Why would it be so interesting?

To start with, I'm an inmate. They're wardens. I suspect some of the details about the expedition have gotten around already—what happened, if not my role in it.

[Pagan waves a hand.]

Oh fuck all of that. I don't care about that.

I care more about why you think that it's interesting I would still want to meet with you after knowing what I know.

[He pauses.]

And I don't know all the details, before you ask. European history doesn't exactly thrill me.

The expedition ended in cannibalism, murder, and mutiny. [ And then, on a whim, Hickey decides you know what. Let's test this man. Let's see how he answers. ]

But he calmly takes a drink.]

I don't suppose you know much about my life if you think that would shock me. And why should you? I've been terribly quiet as of late.

[He thinks a moment.]

In the early days of my reign, people would come from different groups. Peace groups. Dr. Noore Najjar was in one of those groups, bringing in aid for the people of my country, Kyrat. They had been in war for so long, even before me, they fucked themselves over so hard and, of course, fought me so hard, that they wouldn't allow my plans to go forward smoothly. So I brought in help from other countries, just to ensure they didn't fucking starve.

Once she left, she published a rather unfair letter about me and my many abuses of power. Now, some of them were legitimate, but I was young. I was up and coming. I couldn't let that piece of shit propaganda stand. So I formed a committee. I put together 'Kyrat's 12 point plan' for coming back together.' Bullshit like that. Something so enticing that she would be suckered in. I invited her back, with my personal blessing. She and her family would be given the royal treatment at the Palace while she helped me rebuild.

And like the naïve fucking idiot that she is, she did it. But those steps? Were really steps on how I was going to ruin her life. You see, while she was with me, I had her family kidnapped. And I made her run the arena. She processes the opium and runs my exports. All because she thinks that if she doesn't, I'll kill her family. She did this for over a decade.

Truthfully, I had her family killed not long after. My friend Paul's daughter, Ashley is about the age of Noore's kids. We would send Noore the pictures she draws and pass them off as her kids'.

[He sets down his glass and stands up, going to his vanity to find his cigarettes.]

I'm a dictator, Mr. Hickey. My list of atrocities is extensive.
